It Takes Two to Talk® and
More Than Words® the 1-1 Way

Our expert clinical team at The Hanen Centre™ has just completed a two-year intensive project to provide Hanen Certified SLPs with an evidence-based and flexible framework for 1-1 parent coaching with the goal of facilitating parents’ use of Hanen strategies during everyday interactions with their child.

It Takes Two to Talk® the 1-1 Way and More Than Words® the 1-1 Way provide:

• A clear framework to facilitate session planning – The 1-1 Way makes it easy to plan and select strategies for working with individual families.
• Built-in flexibility – The framework allows for individualization and clinical decision-making to meet the unique needs of each family.
• Inclusion of best practice principles in adult learning – A key component of Hanen Programs is the 4P Teaching-Learning cycle that’s based on the principles of adult learning. The 1-1 Way is based on the 4P cycle so SLPs can be sure of the best possible learning experience for each family.
• Multi-context applicability – The 1-1 Way can be used in both in-person and telepractice parent coaching sessions to meet the varied needs of families and clinicians.
• Resources catered to 1-1 – Each parent coaching intervention has a set of specially designed resources, which provide everything the SLP needs for individual parent coaching sessions, including a short manual, slides with embedded video clips, as well as handouts and home plans.

Which children is the 1-1 Way appropriate for?

It Takes Two to Talk®

Supports a range of children with language delays or developmental language disorders, from those who are not yet communicating intentionally to those who are combining 2-3 words. There is also a set of resources for supporting children who are Late Talkers.

More Than Words®

Supports autistic children, as well as children who may benefit from social communication support, ranging from those who do not yet send intentional messages to those who engage in short conversations.

What are the components of Hanen the 1-1 Way interventions?

The It Takes Two to Talk® and More Than Words® the 1-1 Way include:

• A recorded Orientation Session – Parents watch this before attending an initial consultation with the SLP.
• An Initial Consultation – The SLP assesses the child’s communication and the parent-child interaction and sets goals collaboratively with the parent.
• Individualized Parent Coaching Sessions – Using Hanen’s adult learning framework, the SLP coaches the parent to use Hanen strategies with their child. The number of sessions depends on the needs of each child and family and the practicalities of the SLP’s service delivery model.
• Video Feedback Sessions – In these sessions, the SLP records the parent-child interaction and then watches the video together with the parent to talk about what went well and what may be changed to further support the child’s learning.  These are conducted after two or three coaching sessions.

Who can offer It Takes Two to Talk® and More Than Words® the 1-1 Way?

These 1-1 coaching interventions are included in It Takes Two to Talk® and More Than Words® certification. When speech-language pathologists attend these workshops, they receive a license and resources to offer comprehensive and flexible support to families, including:
