Preparing students for engaging parents in early intervention 


To be prepared to offer the most effective early language intervention to young children, SLP students must consider how they plan to involve and engage their parents. Research shows that, while many providers recognize the importance of involving parent in their child’s interventions, they do not consistently apply best practice in parent coaching. 

The Hanen Centre specializes in supporting speech-language pathologists with evidence-based frameworks for engaging and coaching parents. We offer a number of resources to help expand students’ knowledge of parent-implemented intervention, and to prepare them for the best possible start in collaborating with parents.

University Presentation

We offer free online presentations to university students enrolled in speech-language pathology programs. This engaging and interactive session offers students a window into what effective parent-implemented intervention looks like and how they might apply it once they’re out in the field.

Student Community

SLP students can join the Hanen Student Community free of charge to gain resources to prepare for effectively engaging parents. Student Subsidy


We offer new graduates the chance to apply for a $200.00 subsidy toward the registration fee for any It Takes Two to Talk® workshop.

Hanen Guidebooks

If you’re a professor in a speech-language pathology program, including a Hanen guidebook in your curriculum can help you introduce your students  to practical strategies that  parents can learn in order to support their child’s early social and communication development. Involving Students in a Hanen Program

SLP faculty members are eligible to attend a Hanen Workshop (link to workshop splash page), in which they gain an evidence-based teaching methodology and coaching framework for involving parents in early intervention. If you choose to attend a Hanen Workshop, you become certified to lead a Hanen Program for parents, and may request permission to involve a limited number of students in the program as part of their clinical practicum.
