Who is this Workshop For?

Hanen Launchpad to Literacy is for professionals with a post-secondary degree or diploma who work with young children aged 3-5 (typically developing, at-risk or with mild language delays) and/or who support their parents or educators. This includes early childhood educators, kindergarten teachers, speech-language pathologists and other professionals who support the language and literacy development of young children.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

1. Explain how The Hanen Centre’s approach builds parents’ and educators’ capacity to support children’s early language and literacy development.
2. Describe the role of quality adult-child interactions in language and literacy growth.
3. Identify two broad skill sets essential for emergent literacy development according to the Science of Reading.
4. Implement Hanen’s evidence-based emergent literacy strategies with individual or groups of children during everyday activities and interactions.
5. Apply Hanen’s coaching model in order to facilitate parents’ and/or educators’ consistent use of emergent literacy strategies.

What to expect at the workshop

Part 1: Self Study

Before the training, you'll complete a self-directed module to prepare you for full participation in the workshop. You’ll learn about the Hanen approach to building parents' and educators’ capacity to support children’s early language and literacy development. You will also observe how a book is being shared by an adult with a child (or children), and bring your observations to the workshop.

Part 2: Live, online interactive training

Over the course of two full days or four half-days, you’ll participate in highly interactive online learning sessions, led by a Hanen instructor. Each session includes discussion and small group practice activities, as well as the opportunity to reflect and individualize the information for the children and educators/parents you work with.

Note on attendance: Hanen workshops require participants to attend all components of the workshop, as indicated on the workshop registration page. Full attendance is required in order to receive your license to use the Hanen Launchpad to Literacy framework in your 1-1 parent or educator coaching sessions, as well as your proof of attendance.
