Yes, full attendance is required in order to receive your certification.

Only participants registered in the workshop will be permitted to attend. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate interpreters. Due to the fast-paced, highly interactive nature of our workshops, participants must have a high proficiency in English (i.e. they must be able to understand English, respond to questions and contribute comfortably to group discussions, which involves practicing and applying concepts learned during the workshop). All materials are provided in English.

Under certain circumstances, SLP students may be permitted to attend an It Takes Two to Talk® workshop. Please contact us for details.

While you may attend the SPARK Communication™ or 4Is to Socialize™ workshops, the more appropriate Hanen workshops for SLPs who work with families are the It Takes Two to Talk® and More Than Words® workshops.  While SPARK Communication or 4Is to Socialize workshops draw on content from the It Takes Two to Talk and More Than Words parent programs and also offer a framework for coaching parents in 1-1 contexts, they do not certify you to offer the full group program for parents, nor do they provide you with a Hanen membership and its associated benefits.  The It Takes Two to Talk and More Than Words workshops are tailored to the knowledge level and clinical experience of speech-language pathologists, and also provide a more comprehensive set of manualized resources for coaching parents in both group and 1-1 contexts.

Each participant must attend on their own device with a headset and camera. We do not recommend sitting in the same room as it can be distracting during breakout group sessions.

Hanen Programs are trainings that parents and educators of young children attend. They are led by speech-language pathologists or early childhood education consultants who have been certified by The Hanen Centre to offer them.

To become a Hanen member, you must complete one of our three certification-level workshops: It Takes Two to Talk®, More Than Words® or Learning Language and Loving It™. The workshop registration fee includes a one-year Hanen membership that must be annually renewed to maintain certification. Learn more about membership.

You will receive renewal reminders via email as your membership expiration date approaches, and you can use the provided link in the email to renew your membership online. To pay for your membership renewal over the phone or through wire transfer, you may contact our Membership Services Coordinator for assistance.

If your membership has been expired for over a year, you will need to contact our Membership Services Coordinator for assistance. In some cases, you may need to complete a recertification process in order to reinstate your certification.

If a purchase order is required by your organization to raise the funds for your renewal, please contact us to request an invoice for your membership renewal. The invoice will be generated and sent through email to the requested parties. Once a purchase order has been generated and sent back to us, we will update the invoice with your external purchase number and send it back for processing. We offer a discounted renewal rate to our members going on maternity leave so that they may maintain their certification(s) without the risk of having to recertify when returning to work. Maintaining your membership also allows you to stay up to date with information that we publish throughout the year (e.g. clinical updates, articles, member events, etc.). After your signed cooperative agreement has been countersigned by a member of our team, your certification will be instated. This usually takes 1-2 days. If you're having trouble accessing your Program resources, please contact us and we will be happy to assist you. 

A one-year, renewable membership is included with entry-level workshops only (It Takes Two to Talk®, More Than Words® and  Learning Language and Loving It™), and renewal dates are associated with the date you attended your last entry-level workshop. Attending an advanced worskhop does not renew your membership.

Certificates of attendance are only provided to members who attend the live event.

Copyright is the right – or the right to permit others – to produce, publish, or copy a work. “Copying” means reproducing, publishing, translating, or communicating a work using various means and media, including the Internet. Hanen resources have been developed at great effort and expense to support Hanen Programs and use of these resources by Hanen members.

Unfortunately, from time to time, our resources have been copied, adapted, altered, and disseminated without permission. In some cases these versions misrepresented Hanen Programs and the Hanen approach, as well as undermining their quality and integrity. Hanen member resources such as our Leaders Guides, slides, handouts and any other parts of the program are all copyrighted. This means that only current members may have access to them and they may not be shared with anyone. In so doing, we ensure that our members are the only ones who can share our programs and member resources in their clinical work and that are not disseminated by anyone who is not Hanen Certified. Hanen is committed to ensuring that our members and the families and educators that they work with have access to Hanen Programs and materials of the highest quality that reflect our research and methods accurately. It is through this copyright policy that we seek to fulfill this commitment.

As the copyright holder, we cannot provide permission to our members to use, adapt, or copy our resources (beyond what is stated in question 3 below) without seeing what the member is proposing. In addition, when we ask to see your proposals in advance, we are enabling you to comply with copyright laws and policies, and accurately represent the Hanen approach and our resources. Our goal is to help you deliver the best information possible, which benefits all of us, including the parents, teachers, and children we are committed to supporting.

We are continually working to simplify the approval process for use of information drawn from Hanen resources, including adapted programs, written materials, and presentations.

All requests must be submitted for advance approval to our copyright committee.

 

• You may lead the Hanen Programs you have been certified and licensed to lead – It Takes Two to Talk®, Learning Language and Loving It™, More Than Words®, Target Word™, TalkAbility™, or You Make the Difference™.
• You may use the Making Hanen Happen or Leaders Guide in any full Hanen Program you are certified or licensed to lead. Your membership must be current.
• You may use the title “Hanen Certified Speech Language Pathologist/Therapist” to identify that you have completed Hanen Certification training (Please do not use the terms Hanen Trainer or Hanen Instructor). You Make the Difference members should refer to themselves as Licensed YMTD group leaders and LLLI ECE group leaders should refer to themselves as Hanen Certified LLLI Trainers.
• You may copy up to 10 whole, unaltered pages from one Hanen guidebook for distribution to each participant in your program. This does not apply to Teacher Talk™ workbooks or the Target Word™ parent handbook.
• You may informally share information with colleagues and other professionals about Hanen Programs you are certified to lead, where no fee is charged or collected, the meeting is not an official conference or workshop and you follow the requirements outlined in Section 4, Intellectual Property Policy, of your cooperative agreement for use of Hanen materials.

• If you want to offer an adapted Hanen program using information from Hanen resources or programs. Note: Target Word™ and You Make the Difference™ programs may not be adapted.
• If you want to create written materials or online materials which include information from Hanen resources for use in any clinical service or any sharing of information (including the creation of advertising for a service), including handouts and brochures.
• If you want to copy more than 10 pages from any Hanen guidebook.
• If you want to provide any kind of formal, Hanen-based presentation, workshop, course, seminar, or training drawn from Hanen resources or programs to professionals or any public group.
• If you want to reproduce illustrations from Hanen resources.
• If you want to translate part or all of any Hanen resource for any purpose.
• If you want to develop a video for any purpose using information from Hanen programs or resources.
• If you want to develop programs or resources which are based on information from Hanen resources and which may be sold commercially and/or distributed widely.

Hanen members are often granted permission to use Hanen materials in a presentation they are offering to parents or professionals. We offer guidelines for using Hanen materials in such presentations, and we encourage you to read through them before creating your presentation. Hanen encourages Hanen certified faculty members in a university setting to involve up to three students in a It Takes Two to Talk® or More Than Words® Program as a part of a clinical practicum. This process is only applicable for in-person programs and not for telepractice programs. There is a document titled 'Guidelines for Involving Students in a Hanen Program' which members should read before officially requesting permission to involve students. Please contact us to request a copy of the Guidelines. Upon receipt of your request, we will email you the Guidelines document, along with the Request Form to involve students.

There is no cost to enter a partnership with The Hanen Centre and there may be revenue-sharing opportunities to support your organization’s needs.  

Upon entering a partnership with The Hanen Centre, both parties will sign a Partnership Agreement outlining the roles and responsibilities of the partnership. These responsibilities can include drafting/sending communications to your organization’s members regarding opportunities under the partnership agreement, assisting with the coordination of events or professional development opportunities, and support around other forms of promotion.
